Kolar
known for gold and silk worldwide is also occupying top position in milk
production in the state and is located 70 Kms from Bangalore. Though the
district is drought prone it is known for innovative farming. District
stands first in milk production in the state and one among top six
districts in the country. All these achievements in dairy field can be
attributed to late Sri.M.V.Krishnappa who hails from this district
Dairy
development
Due to cross breeding programe taken up by the department dairying has
taken roots i this district. Many of the families in the district are
totally dependent on dairying for their livelihood.1.7 Lakhs crossbreed cattle
are in the district.
Daily milk production of the district has reached almost 8 lakhs litres
of which nearly 5.6 Lakh litres of milk is being procured by KOMUL
through the network of 1168 primary
co-operatives. 2,16,278 dairy farmers are members of these primary
cooperatives. It is heartening to note that 50,000 members are belonging
to SC and ST community. Dairying being a rural based industry, women are
also participating in large numbers in these societies. 28 all women
dairy cooperatives are functioning in the district. Total women
membership exceeds 33,000. Though the societies are self sufficient and
backed by KOMUL, inputs are also provided by Government through IRDP,
DPAP various other socio economic programmes under IRDP infrastructure.
240 milkotesters and chaff cutters are provided. Milkotesters
facilitates instantaneous recording of quality and price of milk.
A separate dairy was established in 1995 to process milk and to
manufacture milk products. This dairy has the capacity to pasturise 4
Lakh litres a day. At present butter, ghee and Peda are also being
manufactured in this dairy. Ghee manufacturing unit is also setup.
KOMUL
sells 76,000 litres of milk a day on its own and rest of the milk is
marketed through Mother Dairy. Payments to the farmers is on weekly
basis through banks.
Other
Animal Husbandry Activities
Sheep
Rearing
Kolar
has got the second largest sheep population in the state after Tumkur.
All sheep rearing in done through small herds of 10 to 20. Local breeds
of sheep which is popular here, are being upgraded through various
schemes by the department of Animal Husbandry and Sheep board. Deworming
being an important programme in sheep husbandry, all the sheep
population in the district are dosed against worms this year. Other
activities related to sheep husbandry like carpet manufacturing etc. are
being done through sheep board and sheep breeders associations. Many of
the youngsters are being trained in machine shearing and carpet weaving
activities. This industry is yet to take roots in this district and it
is hoped to flourish in coming years.

Rearing
The district has got the second largest pig population in the state.
Pork consumption in the district is highest in the state. A separate
sandy for marketing pigs is being held in H.Cross every Monday. Efforts
are being made to upgrade local breeds and educate the farmers to adopt
modern rearing.
To boost pig industry in the district, a project totally sponsored by
Central Government is launched at Bangarapet at the cost of 11.34 Lakhs.
This centre also train the farmers in modern piggery farming. The
project is supposed to supply exotic breeds to the farmers for rearing
and upgrading the breeds.
Poultry
Though this industry has not flourished as dairying in the district, it
is slowly catching the imagination of the farmers. Broiler poultry
farming has become more popular than layer farming. This has given
employment opportunity to the educated youth. To help the farmers ,
Government is encouraging to establish poultry cooperative in the
district.
To improve the backyard poultry, supply of Giriraja birds was started in
1986-87. This breed of poultry has become extremely popular among the
farmers. Government has setup Giriraja rearing centres at Kolar &
Bangarapet. These centres catering the needs of the district in this
regard.
Rabbit
Farming
Though
this is in nascent stage, all efforts are being made to popularize the
rabbit community. Since rabbit consumption has not increased this
activity has not progressed as envisaged.
Animal
Health Coverage
As per 1991 census total livestick population of the district stands at
14.8 Lakhs( Cattle 5 lakhs, buffaloes 1.25 lakhs, sheep 4.9 lakhs).
Health of all these livestock is covered through the network of 196
veterinary institutions. All these institutions also provide artificial
Insemination facility with frozen semen technology.
Apart from regular health coverage through veterinary institutions,
several innovative schemes like free animal health camps are regularly
conducted at village level with Veterinary Specialists( veterinary Gynecologist)
to treat infertile dairy animals. For this programme, funds are provided
under DPAP.
Schemes
To improve the socio-economic condition of rural people. Sheep (10+1)ten
ewes and one Ram are given under special Livestock breeding programme.
Fodder enrichment programme is taken up under DPAP.
