in Kolar District

Karnataka state enjoys the lion share in silk production and occupies
the premier place in the country with all infractural facilities. The
Kolar district in Karnataka which is popularly known as a land of
"Silk, Milk and Gold" is located the south-east of Karnataka
and the the sericultural crops on this land are referred as golden
crops. This district consists of 5 taluks. In all
these villages, sericulture has become the main occupation of the
farmers. Ground water in Kolar is explored in both for domestic and
irrigational purposes. Almost the entire 25 lakhs population and
livestock requirements in district is met by ground water. The ground
water level in the district is approximately 800 ft below the surface,
the decline in total annual rainfall and the non-availability of
sufficient water in the bore wells has further affected by drought
situation with every alternate year likely to affected by the drought.
As there is no proper rainfall at proper time resulting in failure of
crops or no crops at all. So, the mulberry cultivation for farmers has
become a boon in disguise and a ray of hope.

Sericulture
department has taken up several development activities to boost up
the economic conditions of sericulturists and has also taken up steps to
transfer new technology to the sericulturists by imparting training and
conducting other educational programmes.
